People, skills and vision to support growth…

Sheffield’s economy has significantly transformed over the last 20 years. The City’s image has been radically reshaped with a series of high profile improvements to the built environment. Its transformation has resulted in above national average employment growth.

The City doesn’t stand still. It is committed to investing in the City centre, high quality public realm, the City region’s infrastructure, sustainable energy and looking to create public investment funds to lever private sector capital to assist development and inward investment.

In July 2014 Sheffield City Region secured a £320 million Growth Deal which will boost economic growth further and enable it to deliver its three key priorities:

  • Transport, employment and housing sites
  • Better skills
  • Delivering world class business support.

Today and beyond, Sheffield has the infrastructure, people, skills and vision to support growth. Already it has an international reputation for innovation and quality across a growing spectrum of business and technology specialisms.

The scope of Sheffield City Region’s employment offer has led to the development of a skilled and experienced workforce. This workforce is supplemented annually by the graduates of the Sheffield universities and the higher education institutions.

Student workforce
Employers in the catchment area benefit from more than 55,000 Undergraduate and Postgraduate students attending the Universities of Sheffield. More than 18,000 students graduated from these institutions in 2010 with a First Degree or other Higher Education qualification.

Sheffield University was named “University of the Year” in the 2011 Times Higher Education awards and has ranked among the top 25 institutions in Britain since 2000. Sheffield University is ranked as one of the top research universities in the UK, while Sheffield Hallam University is one of the UK’s most progressive and innovative universities, both attracting both domestic and overseas students to the City to study.

*Sheffield has been independently benchmarked as one of the UK’s most cost effective locations in terms of property and staff costs.
